Bushell Celebrates Netting Two Awards

One of Shropshire's leading disabled athletes has won £1,500 from the Nationwide Disability Sports Events Awards 2007. Mickey Bushell, the winner of the 2006 Mini London Wheelchair Marathon, picked up the National Sports Person prize as well as the west Midlands Regional award at last night's ceremony at Old Trafford in Manchester.  Bushell now holds a string of titles, including champion in the 100m and 200m Nationals, and has broken numerous national records.  He represented Great Britain at the senior IPC World Championships as the youngest wheelchair athlete in the squad.  Mickey is ranked first in the 100m for Great Britain and 18th in 
the world.  Last night's awards recognised the achievements of athletes and volunteers, with rewards totalling £22,300 to help support the ongoing development of disability sports talent.

Wheelchair athlete Mickey Bushell won the national sportsperson prize as well as the West Midlands regional award.  In 2007 he recovered from illness to win the T53 100 and 200m events at the DSE British Open in Manchester and was also the under-20 champion over 100, 200, 400 and 1500m.  In addition, the 17-year-old from Telford set a number of personal bests on the road.  The £1,500 prize money (£500 for the regional and £1,000 for the national prize) will help fund his travel costs and allow him to train more for the future.

The event was supported by First Transpennine Express and Manchester United FC.  Mickey Bushell, Telford wins £1500 Seventeen- year- old Mickey Bushell from Telford will pick up the National Sports Person prize as well as the West Midlands Regional Award.
