Disabled athletes in chair race run
By The Shropshire Star Friday 21st September 2007
Dame Tanni Grey Thompson, was being joined by a 17-year-old paralympian hopeful from Shropshire today during a test run for the world’s fastest wheelchair race, GEZE Tunnel 2k International. Paralympic athlete Dame Tanni and Mickey Bushell, from Telford, will reach speeds approaching 50mph as they try out the challenging GEZE Tunnel 2K International course through the Tyne Tunnel Wallsend ahead of the actual race due to take place on September 28. The test run is essential to enable Tyne Tunnel operations staff and film crews to plan for the event and in particular for the speeds that the athletes reach during the race. The record for the downhill stretch of the challenging course currently stands at a blistering 47mph! Dame Tanni and Mickey will be just two of a 26 strong elite field. Mickey is looking forward to the challenge the event presents. “I am the youngest ever male to take part and can’t wait to compete. I love the event and would one day love to win it.”
