I won Young Disabled Sportsman of the year 2005.  My coach Paul Hunt collected my award for me, because I was unable to attend this event.

Written By Tom McCook (President & Public relations Officer of Birchfield Harriers Athletics club)

Birchfield Harriers proved to be the most successful club winning in no less than seven out of the 21 categories the Birmingham Sports Council Awards Ceremony at the National Indoor Arena and placing in several other sections.

The “Magnificent Seven” were: -
Kelly Sotherton – Sportswoman Of the year
Mark Lewis Francis –Sportsman Of The Year
Steve Platt – Coach of the Year
Deborah Brennan – Disability Competitor Of The Year
Jade Surman-Junior Sportswoman Of The Year
Mickey Bushell-Junior Disability Competitor Of The Year
Allan Meddings - Veteran Sportsperson Of The Year

The club had a clean sweep in the Young Disabled category with Keiron Murphy and Iffy Hussain placing second and third respectively. Similarly Lincoln Asquith and Paul Hunt’s contributions were recognised as Coached to disabled performers.

90-year young George Mitchell was runner up in (what else) the Veterans category.

Probably because we had won virtually everything else, our UK Golden Jubilee Cup winning team was placed third in the Team of the Year category.

Me Meeting Tony & Cheri Blair

Monday 19th July 2004

Venue
10 Downing street
Whitehall
London
SW1A 2AA

.

.

.

.

.

I was nominated by Dennis Hodgekins (Regional Managing Director) of The English Federation of Disability Sport, to meet Tony & Cherri Blair.

When my mom first told me that I was going to meet the Prime Minister I almost fainted and didn't know what to say, after I got over the shock I thought brilliant, I am actually going to walk through number 10 how cool is that!

The evening was all in aid of the governments efforts to win the bid to stage the 2012 Olympics and to celebrate excellence in sport, lots of celebrities arrived I was gobsmacked when Sven Goran Eriksson came up to my dad shook his hand and said "hello, nice to meet you" he was so friendly.

My dads night was made when he had a lengthy chat with Chris Eubanks "he is a true gentleman" my dad said and then he said "god I wish we were allowed to take photo's" he also said that he would keep a look out for me at future sporting events and wished me luck with my racing.

I had to have my photo taken outside of No:10 because there is a strict no cameras allowed security rule! but hopefully I will be able to get a copy of one or two of the photo's that the official photographer took.

No 10  website wrote this about the evening: PM Meets Olympic Hopefuls

The Prime Minister met the leader of London's Olympic bid team and young sportspeople who hope to compete in the 2012 Games at a Downing Street reception last night.  Teenagers and children from around the country rubbed shoulders with well-known faces like Sven Goran Eriksson, Frank Lampard and Ronnie O'Sullivan. Double Olympic gold medallist Lord Coe, chairman of London 2012, also attended.

All the young people at the event have established themselves as outstanding young sportsmen and women, or play an important role as mentors or coaches in their local communities. They play sports including netball, cricket, athletics, football and swimming and a number of disabled young athletes were also present.

The reception highlighted the government's commitment to the campaign to win the right to stage the Olympics in London in eight years time. All the young people were given special 2012 medals and designated as ambassadors for the bid.  Tessa Jowell, Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport, was at the event to celebrate the contribution sport makes to life in Britain.

"All the money we have invested, and will continue to invest, in sport in this country is dedicated to building a bridge to the 2012 Olympics, where we hope to see these youngsters going for gold in London," she said.

My Chair was presented to me on the pitch! after receiving The Lady Taverners Young Disabled Award at the BBC Midlands Sports Awards

What Wolves official Matchday Magazine had to say Published: Saturday 17th April 2004

TEENAGE TELFORD WHEELCHAIR ATHLETE
Mickey Bushell (in Wolves shirt) and his coach Paul Hunt are pictured receiving a cheque for £2,400 from Steve Bull, which is funding Mickey's specially fitted racing wheelchair so that he can compete in this year's London Marathon.

Mickey is a pupil at Lord Silkin School, Telford and is a big Wolves fan. He has received his funding from the FA Community Fund and The Lady Taverners whose president is our own public relations executive, Rachael Heyhoe Flint.

After handing over the cheque, Rachael said: "The Lady Taverners were delighted to help Mickey-and our joint sponsorship with the FA Community fund has helped a very special West Midlands Lad."

Mickey who is ranked 92nd in World Wheelchair Racing met Paul Ince and Wolves players at the Compton Park training ground where Paul presented Mickey with a Wolves shirt which he will be wearing during the marathon. So look out for Mickey and we would like to wish him the very best of luck!  (06/07/2005 ~Mickey's World ranking is now 8th for the 100m)

The Lady Taverners Young Disabled Award

Venue

Woodlands Suite
The Belfrey Golf Course
Warwickshire
England

.

.

I was invited to the inaugural BBC MIDLANDS SPORT AWARDS, the awards ceremony was held in the Woodlands suite at the Belfry, on Sunday 7th December 2003. I was nominated for a special award, The Lady Taverners Young Disabled Award for 2003. And to my surprise I won!. Nick Owen of BBC Midlands Today, who is a very cool guy by the way, hosted the event, it was amazing,

I was rubbing shoulders and wheels! With some of Midlands greatest sportsmen and women, Phil THE POWER Taylor, 10 times world darts champion was a very funny man, he thought me and Paul were cool! Wow, what a compliment. We also met Steve Bull from Wolves FC, he was fantastic too, his favourite word for the evening was Scandalous.

I was presented with a cheque for £2,200 for a new race chair, and as I am sharing a chair with my coach Paul Hunt at the moment, which is not an ideal situation, I am very grateful to be getting a chair especially fitted for me.

The President of the Lady Taverners Rachael HeyHoe Flint MBE presented the Cheque to me on behalf of the: The Lady Taverners and Wolves Aid, which is part of the Wolverhampton Football club, and the FA Community Shield who all jointly funded the money to pay for my new chair.

So I would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to the Lady Taverners, Wolves Aid and Wolverhampton Football Club and the FA Community Shield. I would also like to say a VERY Special THANK YOU to Rachael HeyHoe Flint MBE for making Pauls life and my life much easier at races, thank you again, I think your all FAN-TAST-IC!
